Short answer
P0121 sets when the computer decides the throttle angle is greater or less than it should be for the RPM. The usual cause is a sensor with an intermittent open or short inside (a worn track), followed by a rubbing harness, a bad connection, water or corrosion in the connector, and, less likely, the computer. A slow sweep test usually finds it.
- Code
- P0121
- Generic title
- Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance
- Meaning
- The signal does not match what the engine is doing (RPM, airflow).
- Severity
- Medium to high
What P0121 means
OBD-Codes.com puts it simply: if the computer detects that the throttle angle is greater or less than it should be for a specific RPM, it sets P0121. It describes a 5 V reference to the sensor with roughly 0.5 V at idle and 4.5 V at full throttle, but your vehicle’s figures are in its service manual.
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- Intermittent stumble on acceleration or deceleration
- Black smoke on acceleration
- No start, in some cases
Causes
P0121 causes, per OBD-Codes.com
| Cause | How to check |
|---|---|
| Intermittent open or short inside the sensor | Dropouts or spikes in a slow sweep |
| Harness rubbing, causing an open or short | Wiggle test while watching live data |
| Bad connection at the sensor | Inspect and clean the connector |
| Water or corrosion in the connector or sensor | Unplug and inspect |
| Engine computer (less likely) | Only after the circuit checks out |
How to diagnose P0121
Compare idle and wide open readings
With a scan tool, compare the TPS readings at idle and wide open throttle to the values in your service manual. Off spec with good wiring means a bad sensor.
Look for dropouts
Sweep slowly and watch for drops or spikes. OBD-Codes.com recommends a scope here; a graphing scan tool or a meter with MIN/MAX also helps.
Wiggle test
Move the connector and harness while watching the signal. A dropout that follows your hand is a wiring fault.
Check the circuit
No signal at all? Check the 5 V reference and the ground at the connector, and make sure the signal wire is not shorted to battery voltage.
Repair and relearn
Replace the sensor or repair the wiring, clear the code and run any relearn.

Questions people ask
Can I drive with P0121?
Gently and briefly, if the car behaves. OBD-Codes.com lists stumbling on acceleration or deceleration, black smoke and even a no start among the symptoms, and some vehicles limit power. Fix it soon.
Will a replacement sensor fix P0121?
If the sweep test shows dropouts or the readings are off spec with good wiring, usually yes. If the sweep is smooth, look at the wiring and connector before buying a sensor.
Can a vacuum leak cause P0121?
The computer compares throttle position with other readings such as airflow, so problems on the airflow side can cause confusing range codes on some vehicles. Fix any vacuum leak or airflow sensor code first, then recheck.
